Boorowa Hostel Incorporated (BHI) are a not-for-profit, community-owned organisation which has operated a small twenty-bed aged care facility known as Burrowa House since 1992.
The BHI philosophy is to provide affordable accommodations for the older people in and around Boorowa.
Our story
History
BHI has no debts and has always had the policy to provide a caring ‘country home’ residence, and profit is secondary to that. In 1995, BHI purchased approximately 7.5 hectares of land just across the road from the Hostel and in 1997 commenced building independent living units in a ‘retirement village’ complex.
Four units were built and NSW Community Housing purchased a block of land from BHI to build four public community housing ‘cottages’. Plans were drawn up to build around 80 units on the 7.5 hectares of land and in the centre of the proposed village, and the provision was made for a new aged care facility together with appropriate landscaping, community and leisure areas. This facility proved to be too expensive to build with an estimated cost of around $8 million.
Community leadership
Management
BHI is managed by an elected board drawn from the Boorowa community, and in October 2009 there was a major change to the membership of the management committee.
A new president, secretary and treasurer were elected along with some new committee members who have wide experience in business, finance and aged care.
